Carrera Cup GB: Zamparelli Wins At Silverstone
Dino Zamparelli gave his championship hopes a huge boost with a fighting pair of victories in rounds twelve and thirteen of the Carrera Cup GB at Silverstone…
Round twelve of the series saw damp and treacherous conditions at the start. Up front pole-sitter Dan Cammish initially led Dino Zamparelli from his JTR teammate, Tio Ellinas in third. From 13th on the grid championship leader, Charlie Eastwood, was serving a ten place grid penalty, but made up places rapidly. Cammish and Zamparelli began to stretch away from Ellinas, Zamparelli seemed more comfortable in the early stages of the race, overtaking Cammish around the outside of Brooklands, and he would not relinquish the lead.
As Zamparelli put on an impressive performance up front, Ellinas caught and passed Cammish, relegating the defending champion to third position. Zamparelli though, conscious of a warning for track limits, ran wide at Becketts, emerging just ahead of Ellinas who now had Cammish applying pressure. Cammish got by the Cypriot to regain second place, but he could not catch Zamparelli. The returning Karl Leonard started the race very much in control of Pro-Am1, but ended up in a race-long battle that finished with category title contender Alex Martin, ultimately coming out on top. In Pro-Am2 Peter Kyle-Henney took victory.
For round thirteen Cammish lined up in front for a standing start, but it was Porsche GB 2016 / 2017 Scholar, Charlie Eastwood, who made the best of the front row starts, launching past Cammish to take the lead into Copse. Cammish quickly regained the lead and began building a healthy gap before a fire put the leader out of the race – and potentially out of the championship fight too…
Behind, race one winner, Zamparelli, had made a good start from fourth and benefitted from a tangle between Eastwood and Ellinas ahead, as Ellinas ran wide he took Eastwood off with him, leaving Zamparelli a gap up the inside, he emerged in second with Ellinas third and Eastwood demoted to fourth. Zamparelli was then able to take over the lead when Cammish was forced into retirement. At the flag it was Zamparelli from Ellinas and Eastwood.
In Pro-Am1, Alex Martin of Team Parker Racing took victory, John McCullagh and Graeme Mundy came behind to round out the podium places. Pro-Am2 saw Peter Kyle-Henney take his eighth win of the season and second win of the weekend.
The championship heads to its conclusion at Brands Hatch in two weeks. Taking dropped scores into account, it sees Eastwood leading Zamparelli, with Cammish trailing in third.
