24-Hour Le Mans: Halfway and holding
From Brian Laban, in Le Mans
03.00: Twelve hours ago, you wouldn’t have found many takers for the idea of all three Porsche and all three Audi hybrids still being running at half distance, let alone running essentially trouble free, still with the top four within two minutes of each other, and swapping places all the time. But they are, and so far there’s no reason to think they won’t carry on.
If they don’t break the ultimate distance or lap records, I’d put money on the other side of the wall destroying the crowd record, and anyone still sitting in the grandstands or raising a glass or two in the village in the small hours will talk about this one for a long time to come – wherever it goes from here.
The halfway pattern was 19 Porsche, 9 Audi, 7 Audi, 17 Porsche, 8 Audi, 18 Porsche. The leader had covered over 1630 miles, almost without missing a beat. It’s all to play for.
