24-Hour Le Mans: In The Beginning
Brian Laban, at Le Mans – 15.30: the opening laps
We have a race on our hands: Porsche’s three-car grid lock-out didn’t quite survive the first lap, as Loic Duval’s 8 Audi squeezed past Nico Hulkenberg’s 19 Porsche almost within sight of the start line – followed on the next lap by Lotterer in the 7 Audi, and by about twenty minutes in, by Bonanomi in the 9 Audi – by which time Duval was pressing Jani for second, but Hulkenberg was stealing back fifth. So at half an hour it’s Porsche, Porsche, Audi, Audi, Porsche, Audi. It’s a very long time indeed since it’s been this close for this long at the front in the early laps, and Audi and Porsche are already trading fastest laps in the low 3m 20s. We have a real race on our hands.
