New Apple CarPlay Head Units from Kenwood
It’s fair to say many of us rely on our smartphones to run all manner of aspects of our lives – whether it’s our day-to-day schedule, communicating with others or entertainment. With older entertainment systems in cars, the connectivity with our smart devices usually stops. Now, however, Kenwood has launched an advanced in-car entertainment system offering the latest in connectivity and best of all, it’s an ideal fit for older generation Porsches from across the range.
Kenwood’s recently launched Apple CarPlay unit provides full integration with iPhones into an in-car entertainment system. The video demonstrating the product uses a 996 GT3 which, as you can see, shows a much upgraded interface over the standard and now out-of-date entertainment system. Crucially, a 6.2 or 7-inch touchscreen makes navigation far more straightforward than Porsche’s traditionally button-heavy approach.
Plug in an iPhone and the head unit offers a range of functions familiar to any Apple device user. It’s possible to Take calls, check voice mail and send messages with Siri voice activated commands. Apple maps can also be used for navigation and access to iTunes and Spotify ensures that the latest streaming services are fully integrated.
As well as all of the Apple functions, the Kenwood Apple CarPlay head unit has built-in Garmin navigation and DAB radio, DVD, CD, USB and SD playback, Bluetooth dual phone connection and the potential to integrate front and read cameras.
The Kenwood Apple CarPlay certainly looks like the real deal and would make a fine improvement to a standard sound system in most previous gen cars. Prices for compatible head units from Kenwood start at around the £500 mark and climb to over £1,000 depending on the level of in-built functionality.
