Porsche Teases Next 911
Porsche has teased details of the next generation of 911, dubbed the ‘992’. The car, which appears in its images wearing camouflage dress, is sure to showcase the first hybrid drivetrain in a 911. “We know where we’re from and where we want to go,” said August Achleitner, the man responsible for the 911 model line at Porsche. “The decisive factor is that the 911 generates a driving feeling that no other car can impart.”
“With each innovation, the decisive factor for me is whether it suits the character of the 911,” explained Achleitner. “We don’t necessarily have to be the first in this regard with the 911. What’s crucial, rather, is that every innovation be offered in a typical Porsche manifestation.” Porsche is keen to highlight the technological advances we can expect to find packed into the new 911, such is the nature of its evolution not revolution mantra. The same will be the case for its aesthetics, even from the disguised vehicle in these pictures it’s possible to tell we can expect a subtle, not overt new look. The expected introduction of a hybrid version of the 911 is an interesting talking point. Porsche has been working on how best to package the hybrid system in the car for some time, likely it would use a 2.9- or 3.0-litre affair, a derivative of the unit we’ve seen in the all-new Panamera. On the subject of such a car, Achleitner said: “Two years ago I’d have said no way. Today I wouldn’t categorically rule it out…”
Opinion is divided on whether or not the eighth-generation 911 will appear at the end of 2018 (the Frankfurt Motor Show would be likely) or the beginning of 2019. What we can confidently state is that the 911 will fall into line with the rest of the Porsche range when it comes to its interior. The Advanced Cockpit we’ve seen in the latest variants of Panamera and Cayenne will appear, which means the days of the traditional five-pod instrument layout could be numbered. Even the rev counter could be digital. The option to customise its layout is certain to be included.
