Supercup: Cairoli Wins Anniversary Race In Monaco
Torrential rain hit Monaco for the second round of the 2016 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup (the 250th Supercup race), resulting in exceptionally challenging conditions for the 25 participants. Just like in the Formula One race that afternoon, the safety car led the field over the first couple of laps until the race was green-flagged for a rolling start. Porsche Junior, Matteo Cairoli, pulled clear from pole position ahead of guest driver, Klaus Bachler, in increasingly heavy rain.
The safety car made a second appearance in the early stages of the race in order to allow the recovery of two stranded cars. Upon the restart Briton Ben Barker closed the gap to Michael Ammermüller in third. On the penultimate lap, Bachler, slid into the barriers while in second spot, bringing out the red-flags, “The conditions were extremely tricky, I simply became a passenger,” Bachler said. On count back Bachler retained his second position, and had to hurry from his damaged 911 to reach the podium ceremony in time. Cairoli, Bachler and Ammermüller occupied the three podium places – it marked Cairoli’s second victory this season in just two rounds following his success in Spain.
Barker claimed fourth, Porsche Junior Mathieu Jaminet was fifth, Christian Engelhart sixth behind Jaminet. Another pair of Porsche Junior drivers, Dennis Olsen and Sven Müller were happy. Olsen finished in 11th place, Müller fought from last place on the grid following a crash during qualifying to finish an impressive 13th – Müller said: “I never imagined I’d yield any points at all today, because everyone knows how hard it is to overtake here in Monaco.”
Cairoli’s cool, calm and collected drive marks him out as a man to watch during the 2016 Supercup season, he said: “To win on this extraordinary racetrack is simply the most wonderful thing in the world! I actually love racing in the rain, but it was really difficult here in Monaco. The rain was so heavy in the last laps that I felt as if I was driving on a water slide.”
