Supercup: Sven Müller Wins in Austria Thriller
Changeable conditions greeted the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup field at Austria’s Red Bull Ring creating a turbulent race with no shortage of incident. This, the third round of the season, was once again the warm-up for Sunday afternoon’s Formula 1 race and even before it started, there was plenty of action to entertain the crowds at the Spielberg-based track.
Matteo Cairoli, who had posted pole position on Saturday, lined up next to Mathieu Jaminet on the first grid row with Junior, Sven Müller, starting the race on the second row. Throughout the morning rain showers persisted, but as the 29 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars formed on the grid, blue skies greeted them. Several drivers had opted for wet tyres thinking the rain would persist, but as it became obvious that the dry conditions were there to stay, teams caught out by the conditions hurried to change to slicks.
As the race got underway Müller and Jaminet immediately overtook Cairoli on the right and left to occupy the first two positions. Swiss driver Jeffrey Schmidt also managed to squeeze past the Italian to make up the top three spots. Speaking about his weak start, Cairoli said, “I had a problem at the start finding right balance between throttle pedal and clutch and I lost three positions. Every time I managed to gain ground in the race the safety car came out and there wasn’t much I could do. Of course I’m disappointed that I didn’t win here.”
Just like the previous round in Monaco, safety car periods were fairly regular as drivers got caught out by the drying track. On three separate occasions the field was bunched together as cars had to be pulled out of the gravel, putting pressure on Müller throughout the 16 laps. Keeping a cool and composed head meant that by the chequered flag, the trio who had made the most of the start crossed the line as they had after the first lap.
Commenting on his victory, Müller said, “To win on the Red Bull Ring from the second grid row is really incredible. It wasn’t easy because we had wet and semi-dry conditions on the track. Still, I’m absolutely thrilled.” Second place man Jaminet was similarly happy with the result, which constitutes his third podium out of three races, “Two podium results from three races is really great. I got away well at the start. Sven and I sprinted to the first corner side by side, but he had a small advantage because he was on the dry line. Then he got ahead of me and I wasn’t able to overtake him for the remainder of the race.”
