2016 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Preview
The 2016 Porsche Carrera Cup GB season gets underway this weekend at Brands Hatch in Kent with its first two rounds…
Twelve teams fielding 26 identical 460hp 911 GT3 Cup cars will contest the 16 races of the 2016 Carrera Cup GB, and most importantly the single marque series looks set to produce close and exciting racing once again. The championship is split into three main categories: ‘Pro’ for experienced drivers competing for outright championship glory, ‘Pro-Am1’ for newer drivers, and ‘Pro-Am2’ for those making the break into top-line UK motorsport for the first time. There’s also the ‘Rookie Class’ for Carrera Cup GB rookies aged between 17 and 24, it offers a £50,000 winner’s prize pot.
Of the newcomers to the series this year there are several rookies looking to make a mark early on. Porsche’s 2016/17 Carrera Cup GB Scholar, 20-year-old Charlie Eastwood, 23-year old Lewis Plato (Team Redline), Alessandro Latif (GT Marques), Sean Hudspeth and Euan McKay will all be looking to come out as top rookie. Also 2015 Ginetta GT4 Supercup champion, Tom Oliphant, run by Redline Racing, is sure to be in contention. If pre-season testing is any benchmark, Tom has adapted from Ginettas to a rear-engined 911 with ease.
Of course there are plenty of returnees to the Carrera Cup GB too. Redline Racing’s Dan Cammish dominated the 2015 season, which just so happened to be his first full season in the series. Dan will be looking to fiercely defend his crown in 2016. Defending 2015 Rookie Class champion Tom Sharp of IDL Racing had a strong debut season last year, including his maiden win at the final round. Likewise former single seater driver, Dino Zamparelli, will be looking to maintain the run of form he found following his move to the GT Marques squad during 2015, the former race winner was immediately on the pace at the Silverstone pre-season test. However, experienced hands Stephen Jelley of Team Parker Racing, and Jonas Gelzinis of Juta Racing might have something to say about that…
The Pro-Am1 category should prove competitive this year too. IN2 Racing’s Dan McKay is aiming for the title crown in his first full season of Carrera Cup GB racing, but he’ll have to fend off newcomers Sean Hudspeth of Parr Motorsport, and Justin Sherwood of Team Parker Racing. Pro-Am2 will be even more of a tough one to call, reigning champion John McCullagh starts as favourite, but 2014 runner-up Peter Kyle-Henney, and 2015 returnee Iain Dockerill will, amongst others, give him a run for it. New to the category is Redline Racing’s Barrie Baxter and Intersport’s Mark Radcliffe.
Carrera Cup GB drivers are eligible to participate in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup support race at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, and qualify for a limited number of guest slots with Carrera Cup France and GT3 Cup Challenge Benelux in their championship round supporting the WEC at Spa-Francorchamps. Proof of what’s on offer for those drivers who are successful in the Carrera Cup GB is 2015 series front-runner, Paul Rees, he joins the international Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup series for 2016. It’s a logical next step up the Porsche career ladder, which includes 20 Porsche one-make Cups worldwide, it can see drivers rising right to the top echelons of the sport. Rees will be run by the MOMO Megatron Team Partrax squad.
Thanks to its support of the British Touring Car Championship, all the action from the Porsche Carrera Cup GB is being broadcast live on ITV4.
