Supercup: Ammermüller Wins Season-Opener
Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup stalwart, Michael Ammermüller, took a clean sweep of pole position and a race win at the championship’s opening round at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain. A 30-strong field of 911 GT3 Cup cars lined up on a dry grid for the opening race of the 2018 season in support of Formula One.
Pole-sitter Ammermüller pulled clear of the pack early on, however, the field closed up when the safety car was deployed. However, Ammermüller kept his cool and crossed the finish line first after 14 laps with a 3.4-second advantage over Dutchman Jaap van Lagen.
Right to the finish line, van Lagen and Dylan Pereira were involved in a thrilling battle for second place. Pereira crossed the finish line ahead of van Lagen, the pair separated by just a tenth of a second. Fourth place went to 18-year-old Porsche Junior Julien Andlauer, the defending Carrera Cup France champion is contesting his maiden Supercup season. Fifth place was occupied by the top rookie, Larry ten Voorde ahead of Briton Nick Yelloly. Former Porsche Carrera Cup GB Scholar and 2014 Carrera Cup GB Champion, Josh Webster, came home in ninth spot.
Porsche Junior Thomas Preining ended his race outside of the points, the 19-year-old had to park his car in the pits after ten laps. Roar Lindland was the best driver in the ProAm classification. The Norwegian reached the finish line ahead of Nicolas Misslin and Christof Langer.
Round two of the Mobil 1 Supercup will be contested in Monaco on 27 May.
